12 best AI sex story generators, free tiers compared

One prompt in, a finished erotic story out. We ranked twelve tools on what their free tier actually gives you, what the paid plans really cost, and what their 18+ policies genuinely allow.

We may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Rankings are independent and a place on this list cannot be bought. Prices were recorded around 1 September 2026 and change often.

What an AI sex story generator actually is

An AI sex story generator takes a single prompt — characters, a setting, a heat level — and returns a finished erotic story. You are not co-writing it, you are not steering it turn by turn, and you are not maintaining a relationship with a character. You type once and read what comes back.

The category gets muddled because three different product types compete for the same search. Knowing which one you want saves you a subscription you will cancel in a week.

Story generator

A form. Fill it in, press once, receive prose. The interaction ends when the story arrives.

SmutFinder, Smitten, RedQuill

Companion app

A relationship simulator. It remembers you, it initiates, and it is built so you come back tomorrow.

Character.AI, CrushOn, Candy AI

Novel workspace

A long project. Outlines, character bibles, revision tools, continuity across weeks of writing.

Sudowrite, ErosWriter, NovelAI

There is a fourth option people try first and abandon: general assistants. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini refuse explicit sexual content in their consumer products. That refusal is a policy decision, not a technical limit, and it is the entire commercial reason the tools on this page exist.

If a companion is what you actually want, our AI girlfriend apps ranking is the right page instead.

How we ranked these tools

Intent came first. For every product we asked a blunt question: does this genuinely turn a prompt into a story, or is it a chat companion wearing a generator headline? Several products describe themselves as story generators on the homepage and then drop you into a message thread. Those got marked down, not excluded, because some readers will want them anyway.

After intent, three things decided the order.

A free tier you can actually use. Not a three-day trial that requires a card. Not ten tokens that evaporate on the first generation. Something that lets you find out whether the output is any good before you decide anything. This is weighted heavily because output quality varies enormously between tools, and no review including ours can tell you whether a particular model's voice works for you.

An 18+ policy we could read ourselves. Not a claim on a landing page, the actual acceptable-use document. Products that bury or omit it scored worse, because a policy you cannot read is a policy that can change without you noticing.

Honest pricing. A published number that matches the checkout. This sounds like a low bar. Four of the twelve tools here fail it, listing different prices on different pages of their own site.

What we deliberately did not do is treat “most uncensored” as a virtue. Plenty of brands lead with the word and then, one click later, ban CSAM, non-consent and real-person deepfakes in their own rules. We take those bans at face value, we did not jailbreak anything, and we do not reward a tool for how far past its published policy it can be pushed. You can read how we test and score every platform for the full methodology.

One limitation, stated plainly.

Three of these twelve platforms were tested hands-on. The other nine are assessed from official pricing, policy and product pages fetched around 1 September 2026. Wherever a company throws out a marketing number we have flagged it as a claim rather than a fact. This is a desk-researched ranking with a tested core, not a twelve-way bake-off, and you should weight it accordingly.

SmutFinder and SmutWriter are not the same product

This trips people up constantly, so let us clear it before the list. SmutFinder lives at smutfinder.com, generates stories from a prompt, and is ranked first here. SmutWriter lives at smutwriter.com, is a writing workspace with a Story Bible and reusable characters, and is ranked fourth.

The names rhyme, the products do not, and we treat them as two separate picks with two separate reviews. If you searched for one and landed on the other, that is the reason.

The twelve picks in full

Ranked by how well each one does the one-prompt job. The further down you go, the more likely a tool is really a co-writer, a companion or a game that happens to allow adult content.

1

SmutFinder

Best one-prompt start, and the only free tier here that asks for nothing at all.

$4.99–$149.99

SmutFinder does the thing most people mean when they run this search. You type a fantasy, pick your characters, setting and spice level, and it writes the story. The homepage still leads with that four-step generator, and the product has since added play-by-play chats, inline images, chaptered novellas and a community library on top of it.

The free tier is the reason it ranks first. No account, no card, and you get a full chapter with trope selection and character memory. You can find out whether the writing suits you in about two minutes, having given up nothing.

There is no public pricing page, which is a mark against it. The August 2026 checkout recorded Plus at $4.99 and Premium at $9.99 a month, with 20% off annual plans. Treat those as snapshots and confirm the live numbers.

The honest downside. Results depend heavily on how you prompt it, occasional generation failures still get reported, and it is not a companion app even though the homepage now talks about chatting. If chats and images are the specific reason you would pay, verify they are live in-product first.

NovelX is an erotic story writer that also handles chat, audiobook narration and adjustable heat, with an iOS app in the mix. It is the strongest all-rounder here if you want your story in more than one format, and the narration in particular is something most competitors charge extra for or do not offer at all.

The free allowance is 10 tokens according to the homepage, though a separate marketing page on the same site quotes 5. Either way it is enough for a taste, not enough to form a real opinion.

Its rules ban minors, non-consent, incest, animals and celebrities. Worth knowing that the site still tags dubious-consent content despite the non-consent ban, which is a real contradiction rather than a technicality.

The honest downside. NovelX cannot keep its own token counts and prices consistent across its own pages. That is a small thing that tells you something about operational discipline, and it means you should screenshot what you were quoted.

3

RedQuill is built around a free daily habit and a shared library you can fork. If you want a regular story without paying, and you enjoy taking someone else's premise and running it somewhere different, this is the most interesting product on the list. The remix mechanic is genuinely novel in a category where most tools treat output as disposable.

The in-app currency is Quills. Refunds are offered only within 24 hours, and only if you have spent nothing, so decide fast. Pro and Premium climb to around $27 monthly at the top.

Its guidelines are explicitly not unfiltered: minors in any suggestive context, real-world animal content, rape framed as titillation and graphic gore are all banned.

The honest downside. Stories are remixable by default. If you wanted a private draft, that is a problem, and it is the kind of default people discover after the fact.

SmutWriter is a proper writing environment, with a Story Bible, reusable Muses, agentic chapter tools and a Companion chat mode. It is aimed at people building longer work rather than firing off a single scene, and the Muses system suits anyone maintaining a recurring cast.

Pricing is where it gets messy. Three different numbers appear across the company's own terms, FAQ and blog. Check the live checkout before you commit, and do not assume the cheapest published figure is the one you will be charged.

CSAM and real-person non-consensual imagery are banned, even though the product markets dark-romance and dub-con fiction. Those two positions coexist, which is normal for the category but worth understanding before you assume a prompt will run.

The honest downside. No single published price, and a Companion Mode that is the wrong shape if you only want one-prompt generation.

Day pass
$6.99
Monthly

Annual
$5.75/mo

Smitten keeps things simple, and in a category full of overbuilt products that is worth something. No onboarding, no character builder to fill in, no currency to understand. An older FAQ says three free stories but the homepage says two, so plan for two.

Paid unlocks unlimited and longer stories, character chat, extra languages and narration. The day pass is a good structure that more tools should copy — it lets you have a heavy weekend without a subscription.

The honest downside. Two free stories is thin next to SmutFinder's free chapter, and every meaningful extra sits behind Plus. The age checkbox is not the policy, so read the off-limits section before assuming a prompt will run.

6

AfterDark

The strictest published policy here, and it says so upfront.

$24.99/mo
Studio
$49.99/mo

AfterDark positions itself as a private, age-verified studio for erotic stories and cinematic fantasies. It is upfront that it is a consent-first studio rather than an unfiltered chatbot, and that honesty is unusual enough in this market to be a feature.

The free tier covers 30 story beats, 10 covers and 3 read-alouds monthly. Building in beats is either a useful control or an annoying extra step, depending on what you came for.

It verifies adults, bans CSAM including fictional minors, blocks real-person exploitation and deepfakes, and restricts dubious-consent scenarios.

The honest downside. Checkout was not live when we looked, which makes the pricing theoretical. Age verification also means handing over more identity data than any other tool here asks for.

7

My Spicy Vanilla

Illustrations, narration and more than 30 languages.

Annual
~$8.99/mo

My Spicy Vanilla leans into illustration and audio, with a couples-friendly angle. The multilingual support is the broadest here by a wide margin, which matters if English is not your first language.

The free tier includes no NSFW images. If pictures are the actual point for you, a dedicated NSFW AI image generator will do more for less. Commercial rights come only with a paid plan.

The company says consent is non-negotiable and that the AI will not generate non-consensual content. That is a marketing claim rather than a published acceptable-use document, so confirm it in-product.

The honest downside. You are paying for pictures and narration, not for a big free text allowance. Two chapters a day is restrictive if text is what you actually want.

8

ErosWriter

You own output

ErosWriter is a long-form editor with a story bible, built for co-writing something substantial rather than generating one-click scenes. You own what you write, per its FAQ, and billing is discreet — one of the only tools here to say so explicitly.

The annual discount is the steepest on this list, which tells you the product expects committed users rather than casual ones. It draws an absolute line at any sexual depiction of minors.

The honest downside. Once the trial ends there is no free tier, so you are choosing between paying and leaving. For a single scene it is the wrong tool entirely.

9

NovelAI

Powerful, long-established, and the steepest learning curve here.

NovelAI is Anlatan's storyteller with an anime image generator attached, and people often land here looking for erotica. It absolutely handles adult fiction and has one of the longest track records of any product on this page. But it is a lorebook-driven storyteller, not a one-click form, and there is real setup before it does anything impressive.

The terms require you to be 18 or older. The public Explore gallery is kept SFW, which does not define what your private output can be, so read Anlatan's current terms rather than inferring from the gallery.

The honest downside. It is the wrong shape if you just want one prompt and a finished scene, and the Anlas currency system takes a while to understand.

10

DreamGen

Half story generator, half roleplay game, by design.

Generous free tierRoleplay gamesStarter $7.83/mo
Free tier
Company says generous
Starter
$7.83/mo
Advanced
$19.35/mo

$48.30/mo

DreamGen straddles two worlds. It is a story generator and an AI games and roleplay product at the same time, and that dual purpose is the point rather than an accident of scope creep. Its terms ban sexual content involving minors, including fictional ones.

Those odd price figures suggest currency conversion, so the amount you are charged may differ slightly. Introductory discounts are shown as strikethrough promos.

The honest downside. Because it is a hybrid, it is easy to confuse with either a companion app or a pure one-prompt studio. Know which mode you want, or you will use a third of what you pay for.

Ultimate
$99.99/mo

AI Dungeon is Latitude's text adventure, and it is at its best for interactive, choose-your-own-path play rather than a polished single scene. It is the oldest product in this space by some distance and retains a real community.

NSFW is a Mature safety setting rather than a paywall, and you have to confirm you are 18 or over. The service is rated 13+ overall with Mature reserved for adults. Its filters have shifted repeatedly over the years, so check the current settings rather than relying on a forum thread.

The honest downside. It is not purpose-built for erotica. Go in expecting a story generator and you will be disappointed.

12

Sudowrite

Hobby
$10/mo
Professional
$22/mo
Max
$44/mo

Sudowrite is a serious author's co-writer, with a Story Bible and tools to write, expand and rewrite. It is a good product that sits on this page mainly because novelists arrive here after typing the wrong search.

Confirm the current terms on the site. Do not assume it has a dedicated adult-content policy, because it is not marketed as an adult product.

The honest downside. For a single spicy chapter it is overkill, and every generator above it is cheaper for that job.

Four kinds of “free”

Free means four different things across these twelve products, and the difference matters more than the headline number.

No account, use it now

The only version of free that lets you judge output quality at zero cost and zero risk.

  • SmutFinder — a full chapter
  • Smitten — two stories a day

Daily allowance, account needed

Something every day, reset each morning. Good for habit, frustrating for experimenting in one sitting.

  • RedQuill, My Spicy Vanilla, SmutWriter

Monthly credit pool

Spend it how you like, then wait for the reset. NovelX's allowance is small enough to be a demo.

  • AfterDark — 30 beats
  • NovelX — 10 tokens

Time-limited trial

No free state to return to. When it ends you either pay or leave.

  • ErosWriter — 3 days
  • NovelAI, Sudowrite

If your priority is finding out whether AI erotica is for you at all, only the first category answers that honestly. Everything else asks you for something before it shows you anything.

Pricing reality check

Entry pricing runs from about $4.99 to $19 a month. Top tiers reach $99.99. That spread is not really about quality, it is about what each product thinks it is: pure generators cluster at the bottom, workspaces and hybrids at the top.

SmutFinder$4.99
DreamGen$7.83
RedQuill$8.50
Smitten$9.99
NovelAI$10
Sudowrite$10
AfterDark$12.99
AI Dungeon$14.99
SmutWriter$14.99
My Spicy Vanilla$17.99
NovelX$18.99
ErosWriter$19

Lowest advertised entry price per tool, monthly equivalent. SmutWriter's figure is the lowest of three numbers published by the company itself.

Annual billing is where the real discount lives, and the real risk. RedQuill's $8.50 monthly figure is a $102 charge on day one, and refunds only exist within 24 hours and only if you have spent nothing. ErosWriter's $99 year is genuinely good value at roughly $8.25 a month, but it is a year.

Day passes are underrated. Smitten at $6.99 and My Spicy Vanilla at $7.19 both let you have an intensive session without a recurring charge. If you use this kind of tool a few times a year, day passes cost less than two months of any subscription here.

In-app currencies obscure the real price. Quills, tokens, coins, Anlas. SmutFinder's coin packs run to $149.99. Currency systems exist because they make the marginal cost of one more generation feel smaller than it is. Work out what a story costs in actual money before you buy a pack.

Privacy, discretion and what happens to your stories

This is the least-discussed part of the category and probably the most important, because the prompts you write here are more revealing than almost anything else you type into a computer. Four questions are worth asking about any tool on this list.

Does it require an account? SmutFinder and Smitten do not, for their free tiers. That is the strongest privacy position available here, because a service that never had your email cannot leak it.

What appears on your bank statement? ErosWriter states that billing is discreet. Most of the others do not address it on their public pages. If this matters to you, find the answer before you subscribe rather than after.

Are your stories private by default? RedQuill deserves specific attention here. Stories are remixable by default, which is a community feature rather than a leak, but it means your output is visible unless you change something.

How much identity data does it collect? AfterDark verifies age, which is genuinely responsible and also means it holds more information about you than a checkbox-gated competitor does. That is a real trade-off rather than a straightforward good.

What we have not verified.

We have not independently audited data retention, model training practices or deletion guarantees for any of these products, and nobody should tell you otherwise without showing their work. Treat privacy claims on marketing pages the same way you treat “uncensored” claims: read the policy.

How to write a prompt that gets a good story

Output quality depends on your input more than on which tool you picked. The same model produces forgettable filler or something genuinely good depending on what you give it. Four habits help.

Specify the situation, not just the act. “Two people have sex” gives the model nothing to work with. A setting, a reason they are there, and something at stake between them gives it structure. Tension is what makes erotica readable; the explicit content is what the model supplies automatically.

Give each character one distinguishing trait. Not a biography. One thing that shapes how they behave — impatient, guarded, newly confident. Models default to interchangeable characters unless told otherwise, and a single trait usually fixes it.

Set the heat level explicitly. Most of these tools expose this as a dial. Use it. A model asked for “spicy” without calibration tends to either overshoot into anatomy-report territory or undershoot into fade-to-black.

Name the point of view and tense. First person present reads very differently from third person past, and models drift between them if you do not pin one down. This single instruction fixes more bad output than any other.

If a generation comes back flat, change one variable and regenerate rather than rewriting the whole prompt. On a real free tier this costs nothing, which is another argument for starting where the free tier is real.

“Uncensored” is not the same as legal

This page is for adults only, and this is the part we would ask you to actually read.

Fictional adult erotica is widely legal. CSAM, sexual deepfakes of real people, and using any tool to plan a real-world sexual crime are not, and no amount of branding changes that. “Uncensored” is a marketing term, not a legal category, and it does not describe any product on this list.

Several of these companies print the word on a landing page and then ban exactly those categories in their acceptable-use policy one click away. NovelX, AfterDark and My Spicy Vanilla all publish consent-first limits. RedQuill's guidelines are explicitly not unfiltered. AfterDark and DreamGen both ban fictional minors as well as real ones. Believe the policy over the marketing, every time.

That is the honest bar for the whole category, and it is not a limitation imposed on these companies reluctantly. It is the line that lets them exist.

If a tool refuses a prompt involving a minor, a real person or non-consent, take the refusal as the tool working as intended and stop there. Looking for a product that will not refuse is looking for a product that will not exist for long.

Questions people ask

What is the best AI sex story generator?

SmutFinder, judged on the one-prompt job. It scored 8.5/10 in our review, its free tier works without an account or a card, and its entry pricing is the lowest here. NovelX is the runner-up if you also want chat and audiobook narration in the same subscription.

Is there a free AI sex story generator?

Yes, several. SmutFinder works without an account and includes a full chapter. Smitten gives two stories a day, also with no account. RedQuill offers free stories daily. AfterDark includes 30 story beats a month. DreamGen describes its free tier as generous. Caps change often, so treat any specific number as a snapshot rather than a promise.

What is the difference between SmutFinder and SmutWriter?

SmutFinder generates a complete story from a single prompt and ranks first here. SmutWriter is a writing workspace with a Story Bible and reusable characters, aimed at longer projects, and ranks fourth. Different companies, different products, similar names.

Will ChatGPT write a sex story?

Usually not. OpenAI's consumer products refuse explicit sexual content, and Claude and Gemini take the same position. That is a policy choice by those companies rather than a limitation of the underlying technology, and it is the reason purpose-built tools exist at all.

Are AI porn stories legal?

Fictional erotica between adult characters is generally legal for adults in most jurisdictions. CSAM and non-consensual sexual imagery of real people are not, anywhere, regardless of whether a model generated them. Laws differ by country and this is general information rather than legal advice.

Do I want an AI sex story or an AI girlfriend?

If you want something to read, you want a story generator. If you want something that remembers you and talks back tomorrow, you want a companion app. Several products now offer both, but the core experience is different enough that picking wrong wastes a subscription.

Can I publish or sell what these tools generate?

Sometimes, and only on paid plans. NovelX and My Spicy Vanilla both restrict commercial rights to paying customers. ErosWriter states you own what you write. Most others do not address it clearly on their public pages, so check the terms before you build anything commercial on a generated draft.

Are these tools private?

It varies, and the defaults matter. SmutFinder and Smitten let you use free tiers without an account, which is the strongest privacy position here. RedQuill makes stories remixable by default, so your output is visible unless you change that. ErosWriter states billing is discreet. We have not independently audited retention or training practices for any of them.
